Paint Finishes

One of the easiest ways to determine what paint finish would suit your project best is to know the function of the room you are painting. You might need a finish that's going to hold up to a lot of washing (ie child's room) or maybe you want to paint the bathroom, in which case you would need a paint that would hold up to high humidity. Listed here a some of the more poplar paint finishes on the market today and their suggested room usage.

Primer

Primer is a preparatory coating used before painting to ensure better adhesion of paint to the surface, great to use if you are painting a lighter colour over a darker colour to ensure proper coverage.

Matte Finish

This paint has a non-reflective finish and works well for ceilings, also good if you have to camouflage small bumps, cracks, or other imperfections. It is not recommended for high traffic areas and it is sometimes hard to wash.

Flat Enamel

Makes a good choice for powder rooms and halls due to it's durable flat, matte finish, holds up to occasional cleaning.

Eggshell

Eggshell has a very low sheen and is easier to clean than flat paint. It can be a good choice for hallways, kids room or living rooms.

Satin Finish

This paint has a smooth, velvety look with a bit more gloss, most often used for windows, doors, trim, or ceilings, but can also be used as walls. Great for high traffic rooms like kids's room, kitchens or bathrooms.

Semi gloss

Semi gloss has a durable finish and can be washed easily. It's good for rooms with high humidity, like kitchens and Bathrooms. It is also recommended for doors and trim.

High gloss

Good for trim and cabinets as it is durable and easy to wash. Also good for furniture (tables, kids furniture etc). You need to be aware that high gloss paints will show all the imperfections in the surface you are painting.

Paint Effects and Faux Finishes

Faux finishes and paint effects are great if your walls have imperfections. There many different finishes available like river rock, faux suede and faux leather just to name a few. The applications might take a bit longer but the end result is worth it. You can find all the information, tips and advice on different finishes and painting techniques in the paint section of your local hardware store.
