Decorating Style
What's your decorating style? When shopping for furniture or accessories are you drawn more to a modern, sleek style or something with country charm? This short guide will give you some ideas to help you determine your specific favorite decorating style. Country

Country style is rustic, comfortable and romantic. You can achieve this look by using simple but well crafted furniture, unfinished wood with a whitewash effect or a distressed look. Fabrics are usually wool and linen but provincial prints such as toile are often used. Colours used in the Country look are rooted in the rural landscape, usually deep or pale shades (blues and creams are popular). To accessorize your room use items lke wicker baskets, decorative boxes or quilts. Formal or Traditional

If you have a lot of antiques or elaborate pieces this may be the perfect decorating style for you. Formal or Traditional rooms has a classic, timeless appeal. To achieve this look use ornamented furniture and decorative pieces such as curio cabinets and display cases. The finishes are usually painted in a pale shade or finished wood. Marble and glass are also used in a Formal setting. The fabrics used for this style are heavy and more elaborate. Material such as velvet and silk with tassel details. Colours can range from deep to pale. To accessorize a Formal room try using gilt framed art or mirrors and oriental rugs. The overall feeling you want to achieve is one of luxury and grandeur. Eclectic

Personally this is my favorite decorating style because it doesn't really fit into one particular influence. The Eclectic look is a great way to showcase your favorite souvenirs and treasures from your travels. This was a very important style in the Victorian Era. The furniture styles for this type of room varies greatly but try using woods such as teak or bamboo. The finishes are lacquer or animal skin and for the fabrics traditional prints work best(leather, woven grasses or animal print). Use bold and vibrant colours in this room. Now for the accessories, here's where your "world" travels come in, fill your room with tribal arts, pottery or your favorite collection of wooden statues. Casual

If you want a laid back room that's comfortable, functional and suitable for family life then this style is for you. Furniture in this room should be chosen for comfort and generously upholstered. Finishes can be laminate, oak, finished or unfinished wood or veneer. For fabrics try microfibers, brushed cotton, leather and vinyl. The colour choice here is practically anything that creates a warm and comfortable atmosphere. To accessorize the room use pillows, throws, books, photos and any other item choose by the homeowner to reflect their personalty and lifestyle. Modern or Contemporary

The overall look of a contemporary interior is one of balance, harmony and clean lines. Furniture in these spaces have an emphasis on clean lines and simplicity. Popular finishes include, concrete, brushed aluminum, stainless steel, laminate and mirror. For the textiles in this room try using vinyl, microfiber, leather, animal skin and fun fur. You can use a wide range of colours including cool colours or bright and vibrant. Accessorize this sparingly using repeating patterns when placing your items.
